abstract = "The changes in patterns of consumption and increased production of
food have resulted in recent years, a high growth area planted
with major crops, advancing on areas unsuitable, as in the
Permanent Preservation Area - APP. Given this reality and seeking
recovery of these areas, was established in Rio Grande do Sul,
through Resolution CONSEMA n\◦ 100/2005, the State Plan of
Adjustment of the Activity of Irrigation (PERAI), which provides
for the recovery of Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) occupied by
primary production, especially rice crops. This paper discusses
the applicability of current environmental legislation the
Permanent Preservation Area, as well as the use of techniques of
geoprocessing as a tool of support. The difficulties that farmers
are facing in relation to enforcement of APP, in particular, the
PERAI, has peaked in many proposals for easing of some criteria in
order to maintain a balance between preservation and agricultural
production, at the need to promote the preservation of the
environment and ensure the production of food. The reduction of
plantation area and consequent production of food, rather than
attending to the legislation comes to APP, is one of the most
serious problems that is increasing every day, motivated by a
number of factors, such as problems affecting the climate
(droughts, floods), increasing demand for agricultural products as
raw material for the generation of biofuels, improving the
economic power of many populations increasing demand for food.",
